Comparative life cycle assessment of two different battery technologies: lithium iron phosphate and sodium-sulfur

The generation, storage and use of electric energy is a relevant issue for the modern society that dependent from this typology its activities (e.g. heating, goods production). Batteries are key components energy, to be used large set domestic, industrial transport applications. paper investigates environmental impacts two different battery technologies as accumulator in context production plant: (i) lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery, (ii) sodium-sulfur (NaS) battery. analyses have been performed according Life Cycle Assessment methodology, by using ReCiPe method at midpoint endpoint levels quantify potential impacts. Results highlight principal impact technologies, considering all indicators. show LiFePO4 solution can considered most sustainable application. However, difference very small, within 2% strongly influenced needed recharge batteries during phase. Instead, if we consider batteries, NaS resulted with an terms aggregated single score damage category about half comparison solution.
